My thoughts on the eve of Mr.Obama's visit......

Lot has been discussed in the media regarding what Obama is going to bring for India during this visit. Does India require a Diwali gift from the USA? Haven't we, as a nation crossed our childhood era when each visitor is measured by the gifts he/ she brings?? Should the relationship now be beyond simple exchange of gifts and greetings? Shouldn't we now be leveraging each others strength for mutual benefit and common goals??

The strength of American democracy is that its political rivalry is confined only to the extent of an election. Once an election is over, they build up bipartisan consensus on issues concerning their nation and work towards the uplift of their country. How they conduct their campaigns is open to question and people from other parts of the world may not necessarily find it serious - perhaps rather superfluous. This is India's weakness and what our democracy needs to learn from America. In our democracy competitive antagonism is an ongoing process. Scuttling the developmental initiative of one party is the favourite pass time of all others. This has resulted in huge time and cost overruns for all developmental projects in our country. This is one of the principal reasons for the slow development of our country. But is dictatorial rule or Chinese model the only solutions? I do not think so...

Equality is always among the equals and not among unequals-most of America's domestic and international problems would be solved if it respects and recognizes India as equal-the richest democracy in world needs to support the largest democracy-no matter who becomes the president. Like the demise of erstwhile Soviet Union the Chinese empire too would crumble and new nation states would emerge in Asia. USA need to pave the way for the coming and inevitable Asian Union just like EU.

Wars!!! Anyway whose wars America is fighting and Why and for how long?. Instead President Obama must immediatley begin denuclearization of the planet followed by stepwise demilitarization of the nations under UN supervision. Who wants these weapons, wars and violence when millions are to be fed , clothed , sheltered and taught?. True to its' spiritual, philosophical and cultural ethos India need to impress upon USA why and how global peace should move from simple lip service to concrete action.

Think of the children who are condemned to suffer as never before under a regime of drastic climate change-an area where politics would fail and reality would prevail. Both USA and India would find a common destiny soon- to save the humanity and the planet!!!.
